BAND OF HORSES- CEASE TO BEGIN
This just keeps getting better every time I listen to it. There are ghosts in my house!
DUNGEN- TIO BITAR
I have no idea what they are singing (it’s in Swedish) …but it doesn’t matter. This is the best psych folk rock pop period.
LIARS- LIARS
PIL, Jesus and The Mary Chain, mixed with a little Flaming Lips and The Residents and you get one challenging ride to hell and back. Great stuff.
RYAN BINGHAM- MESCALITO
Ex-rodeo rider and Texas local. Just good old gruff alt country.
Hard livin’ and road weary. Can’t stop playing it.
WILCO- SKY BLUE SKY
Great for a late night drive.
THURSTON MOORE- TREES OUTSIDE THE ACADEMY
Who would have thought the Sonic Youther had an acoustic pop record in him. Wonderful!
BLOC PARTY- A WEEKEND IN THE CITY
I’m a sucker for hooky agit post punk! Keep it coming boys!
TIM ARMSTRONG- A POET’S LIFE
Old school raga muffin with a punk snarl….King Tubby would be proud.
THE GO TEAM- PROOF OF YOUTH
Cheerleading music that can turn any scowl into a smile…fun fun fun!
WHITE STRIPES-ICKY THUMP
You know it…you love it!
RADIOHEAD- IN RAINBOWS
Romantic dreamscapes…perfect!
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE- ERA VULGARIS
Rock is not dead…it’s just sleeping in the bed of QOTSA.
EDITORS- AN END HAS A START
More post punk pop about life and death. Melancholy happiness.
SERJ TANKIAN- ELECT THE DEAD
Broadway’s best Metal album. I can’t wait until this replaces Jersey Boys on Broadway.
ART BRUT- IT’S A BIT COMPLICATED
Cheeky Brits make fun pop punk full of funny.
THE SADIES- NEW SEASONS
Canadian alt country. If David Lynch was still making TV shows these guys would be the soundtrack.
PJ HARVEY- WHITE CHALK
Creepy Victorian horror…I like.
OLDIES BUT GOODIES THAT ROCKED ME IN 2007
LINK WRAY- WRAY’S THEE TRACK SHACK
LORETTA LYNN- COLLECTION
THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS- DEFINITIVE COLLECTION
GRAM PARSONS- THE COMPLETE REPRISE SESSIONS

CARY ZEL - Miami Beach, FL
Better late than never:
In no order, really:
Reel Big Fish & Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer – Duet All Night: Covers EP with tongue firmly entrenched in cheek. Great stuff though. And you can’t beat the name.
Regina Spektor – Begin To Hope: This has become one of my desert island disks. I know is was 2006, but I guess I got on the boat late.
J.J. Grey & Mofro – Country Ghetto: Swampy blues from outside of Jacksonville, FL.
Lily Allen – Alright, Still: Really fun early 2007 irreverence.
Rilo Kiley – Under the Black Light: Maybe not as good as the last disk, but “15” and others are great.
The Ike Reilly Assassination – We Belong to the Staggering Evening: Rootsy, down and dirty character studies by Chicago’s Reilly. Who says rock is dead?
Tim Armstrong – A Poet’s Life: Armstrong fronted Operation Ivy & Rancid, but here puts out some great old-school ska/reggae grooves backed by the Aggrolites. I will admit this took a few listens to grow on me, but now I love it.
The Fratellis – Costello Music: Songs you can sing along to the first time you hear them! Have another beer!
Ruthie Foster – The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster: Great authentic soul.
Cat Empire – Two Shoes: Take an Australian rock band with a big horn section and send them to Cuba to record. This is what you get, and it’s pretty good shit.
Great concerts of 2007:
Macy Gray: Hard Rock, Ft. Lauderdale
Rocco DeLuca: Culture Room, Ft. Lauderdale
Regina Spektor: Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC
Lily Allen: Culture Room, Ft. Lauderdale

STUART MOWAT - New York, USA (orig from Glasgow, Scotland)
I still listen to whole CD’s, though I admit to running them at random on my CD player! So here are my top 10, in sequence:
1. Decemberists Crane Wife
2. Good the Bad and the Queen
3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs Show Your Bones
4. Louis XIV Best Little Secrets Are Kept
5. Linkin Park Minutes to Midnight
6. Blaqk Audio Cexcells
7. Fall Out Boy Infinity on High
8. My Chemical Romance Black Parade
9. Spektor, Regina Begin to Hope
10. Modest Mouse We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
And as an honorable mention, try Camera Obscura, from my home country (Makers of Franz Ferdinand and the Fratellis). Their new album “Let's Get Out of this Country” sounds like a cross between the Cowboy Junkies and Altered Images. Give it a try.

MICHAEL SHORE - New York, USA
with the warning that I still DO listen in terms of albums - but then I'm such a luddite I only just got an iPod for the first time, as a Xmas gift, and have not lifted a finger to even try to figure out how to download stuff into it or whatever... and that there's guaranteed to be shitloads of good to great stuff I've managed to miss this past year...
1. Neon Bible by Arcade Fire (especially "Intervention" - Talking Heads meets the E Street Band at an anti-war rally and they all fly to heaven on a church organ woohoo!)
2. Wincing the Night Away by The Shins (especially "Turn On Me" - best Spector cop EVER - and "Phantom Limb" - it's about lesbian lovers, I hear? whatever, I can't figure out what the fuck the lyrics are about but who cares, it's so fucking gorgeous)
3. After Hours by Big Al Anderson (ex-NRBQ guitarist now songwriting in Nashville - every tune a gem)
4. "I Could Be Wrong" by Tim Wilson (a single track - "song of the year" - I'd send you the wave file as an attachment if I could figure out how to cut-and-paste attachments via fucking goddam aol. I'll try to forward it in a separate e-mail. did I mention what a pathetic luddite I am?)
5. The Reminder by Feist (especially "1 2 3 4" - all Apple commercials make me wanna hurl an anvil through the TV but THIS one I am always delighted to see. sexy voice, mega-hooky tune, she's real purty, and I love her totally ofay clumsy dancing...)
6. Sound of Silver by LCD Soundsystem (sometimes the critics are right...)
7. NRBQ - Derbytown (DVD from 1982 - my concession to older stuff you mentioned - these guys remain the best bar band available to the paying public anywhere in the known universe and their typical- night-25-years-ago still runs musical rings round just about anyone and everyone)
8. I'm Not Sentimental by Rob Kendt (smart, funny, tuneful, acerbic and then some - kind of a friendlier Tom Waits, from the pacific northwest I think)
9. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank by Modest Mouse (see #6)
10. "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse (rest of album a disappointment to me but if not for Tim Wilson this'd be track of the year I guess...)

Top 10 List -- A mixed list since I don't listen to enough new stuff
1) Ike Reilly Assassination -- We Belong To The Staggering Evening (The ABSOLUTE best unknow artist out there -- think Dylan/Springsteen/Strummer -- Angry Short Irishman from Chi-town with AMAZING songwriting skills.)
2) Amy Winehouse -- "Rehab"
3) Paul Weller -- Irving Plaza -- The Jam Night -- Opened with 12 Jam songs before he started playing other stuff -- The audience knew every word and were at time drowning the band out. It was unbelievable.
4) Hank William III "Straight To Hell" tour -- Flint, MI -- Took my mom to her first concert and bought a bunch of rounds for some motorcycle dudes to do a little body guard protection for her.
5) Rachel McCartney -- My favorite Harvard Square busker.
6) Atonement -- Never heard so many women weeping in a movie theater.
7) Pistons Vs Celtics -- Round One of what will be many great battles and the Eastern Conference Finals. Charlie and I can trade smack for a few years to come.
8) Detroit Red Wings -- The best run franchise in sports -- PERIOD.
9) Adrianna Lima -- Just plain yummy. Almost as yummy as my wife.
10) Labor Day Trip -- Charlotte, NC, Johnson City, TN, Nashville, TN, New Orleans, LA, Memphis, TN, Chicago, IL -- over 12 days and lots of driving..

ADRIAN BLAKE - Omaha, Nebraska, USA
Kate Nash: Great body of work, and a great songwriter. The voice is a little much, but she captures something new, somewhere between Lily Allen and Ani DiFranco.
The Feeling: “I Love it When You Call” has about 36 hooks and modulates like Manilow. World-class craftsmanship.
Amy Winehouse: Unstoppable. Covers of “Valerie” and “Monkey Man” are particularly good.
The Go! Team: “Doing it Right” = Pop Rocks and Orange Soda.
Fountains of Wayne: “Yolanda Hayes” is the best single of the year written about the DMV
Dans le Sac vs Scroobius Pip: “Thou Shalt Always Kill.” Thou shalt not buy Nestle products?
Flight of the Conchords: That’s why they call them Business Socks.
The Veils: “Advice for Young Mothers-to-Be”. His Dad was in XTC.
The Hold Steady: “Stuck Between Stations” has the guitar hook of the year.
Groove Armada & Mutya Buena: “Song 4 Mutya” is 80’s-tastic
Honorable Mention for Best Rediscovered Adult Contemporary/Soft Rock/70’s pop hit: Andrew Gold, “Lonely Boy”. Seriously, listen to this—it’s immense. Great piano hook, ludicrous but structured lyric, perfect ‘70’s sideman guitar solo. This might have been my most heavily played single this year.
Worst New Trend: The Disney Channel as the new MTV. I saw Hannah Montana live in Omaha. (With Kay Hanley from Letters to Cleo as one of her backing vocalists.)
Best New Trend: The Red Sox Century
Other worthy efforts:
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings: “What Have You Done for Me Lately”
The Fratellis: “Flathead”
Carbon/Silicon: “Why Do Men Fight”
Malcolm Middleton: “A Brighter Beat”
Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake: “Dick in A Box“
Vampire Weekend: “Oxford Comma”
Field Music: “Closer at Hand”
Tracey Thorn: “Raise the Roof”
Young Knives: “She’s Attracted To”
Seu Jorge: All the Bowie covers are great
Arctic Monkeys: “Fluorescent Adolescent”
Peter Bjorn and John: “Young Folks”
Polyphonic Spree: “Lithium”
Bloc Party: “I Still Remember (Lull’s Music Box and Tears Mix)”
Miranda Lambert: “Desperate”
Ted Leo: “The Sons of Cain”
Magic Numbers: “Take a Chance”
Jose Gonzalez: “Love Will Tear Us Apart”
Feist: “1234”
White Stripes: “You Don’t Know About Love, You Just Do What You’re Told”
LCD Soundsystem: “North American Scum”
Sugababes: “About You Now”
Rihanna: “Umbrella”
Rilo Kiley: “Frug”
Radiohead: “Bodysnatchers”
Arcade Fire: “Keep the Car Running”
Klaxons “Golden Skans”
Tegan and Sara “When U Were Mine”
The Hives: “Tick Tick Boom”

I cannot choose a FAVORITE Album/Song but will give you the list of what I listened to MOST in 2007. I've spent the majority of the year in LA where you are in a car most of the day. I have listened to EVERY genre of music in 2007. Unless you want to hear Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Rhianna and Fergie every hour, you learn to get creative.
SONG TITLE/ARTISTS

You know I'm No Good, Amy Winehouse

What a great year for music no? amazing singles, rock, pop… the flight of the conchords!
Flight of the Conchords, for a laugh, a surprise in so many ways;
Tori Amos released a great album, American Doll Posse

Spoon, Gagagaga
Feist, The Reminder
Of Montreal, Hissing Fauna
The shins, Wincing the Night Away
Arthur & Yu There are too many birds
Lavender diamond, Imagine Our Love
The National, Boxer
Amy Winehouse, Rehab and Valerie, two great singles
Mika, Life in Cartoon Motion, the whole album
Orson, great single, Ain't No Party
And then the locals:
Bonde do Rolé, from Brazil, With Lasers. Fresh, raw, fun, powerful, must listen at least once to know the music from brazil now...
Federico Aubele, from Argentina, Panamericana;
Sertab Ebener, from Turkey, launched a best of, Essence, and it has all her singles, the best still being "Every way That I can"
