MICHAEL SHORE - New York, USA

with the warning that I still DO listen in terms of albums - but then I'm such a luddite I only just got an iPod for the first time, as a Xmas gift, and have not lifted a finger to even try to figure out how to download stuff into it or whatever... and that there's guaranteed to be shitloads of good to great stuff I've managed to miss this past year...

1. Neon Bible by Arcade Fire (especially "Intervention" - Talking Heads meets the E Street Band at an anti-war rally and they all fly to heaven on a church organ woohoo!)
2. Wincing the Night Away by The Shins (especially "Turn On Me" - best Spector cop EVER - and "Phantom Limb" - it's about lesbian lovers, I hear? whatever, I can't figure out what the fuck the lyrics are about but who cares, it's so fucking gorgeous)
3. After Hours by Big Al Anderson (ex-NRBQ guitarist now songwriting in Nashville - every tune a gem)
4. "I Could Be Wrong" by Tim Wilson (a single track - "song of the year" - I'd send you the wave file as an attachment if I could figure out how to cut-and-paste attachments via fucking goddam aol. I'll try to forward it in a separate e-mail. did I mention what a pathetic luddite I am?)
5. The Reminder by Feist (especially "1 2 3 4" - all Apple commercials make me wanna hurl an anvil through the TV but THIS one I am always delighted to see. sexy voice, mega-hooky tune, she's real purty, and I love her totally ofay clumsy dancing...)
6. Sound of Silver by LCD Soundsystem (sometimes the critics are right...)
7. NRBQ - Derbytown (DVD from 1982 - my concession to older stuff you mentioned - these guys remain the best bar band available to the paying public anywhere in the known universe and their typical- night-25-years-ago still runs musical rings round just about anyone and everyone)
8. I'm Not Sentimental by Rob Kendt (smart, funny, tuneful, acerbic and then some - kind of a friendlier Tom Waits, from the pacific northwest I think)
9. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank by Modest Mouse (see #6)
10. "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse (rest of album a disappointment to me but if not for Tim Wilson this'd be track of the year I guess...)

MITCH KOZUCHOWSKI - New York, USA

Top 10 List -- A mixed list since I don't listen to enough new stuff

1) Ike Reilly Assassination -- We Belong To The Staggering Evening (The ABSOLUTE best unknow artist out there -- think Dylan/Springsteen/Strummer -- Angry Short Irishman from Chi-town with AMAZING songwriting skills.)

2) Amy Winehouse -- "Rehab"

3) Paul Weller -- Irving Plaza -- The Jam Night -- Opened with 12 Jam songs before he started playing other stuff -- The audience knew every word and were at time drowning the band out. It was unbelievable.

4) Hank William III "Straight To Hell" tour -- Flint, MI -- Took my mom to her first concert and bought a bunch of rounds for some motorcycle dudes to do a little body guard protection for her.

5) Rachel McCartney -- My favorite Harvard Square busker.

6) Atonement -- Never heard so many women weeping in a movie theater.

7) Pistons Vs Celtics -- Round One of what will be many great battles and the Eastern Conference Finals. Charlie and I can trade smack for a few years to come.

8) Detroit Red Wings -- The best run franchise in sports -- PERIOD.

9) Adrianna Lima -- Just plain yummy. Almost as yummy as my wife.

10) Labor Day Trip -- Charlotte, NC, Johnson City, TN, Nashville, TN, New Orleans, LA, Memphis, TN, Chicago, IL -- over 12 days and lots of driving..

ADRIAN BLAKE - Omaha, Nebraska, USA

Kate Nash: Great body of work, and a great songwriter. The voice is a little much, but she captures something new, somewhere between Lily Allen and Ani DiFranco.
The Feeling: “I Love it When You Call” has about 36 hooks and modulates like Manilow. World-class craftsmanship.
Amy Winehouse: Unstoppable. Covers of “Valerie” and “Monkey Man” are particularly good.
The Go! Team: “Doing it Right” = Pop Rocks and Orange Soda.
Fountains of Wayne: “Yolanda Hayes” is the best single of the year written about the DMV
Dans le Sac vs Scroobius Pip: “Thou Shalt Always Kill.” Thou shalt not buy Nestle products?
Flight of the Conchords: That’s why they call them Business Socks.
The Veils: “Advice for Young Mothers-to-Be”. His Dad was in XTC.
The Hold Steady: “Stuck Between Stations” has the guitar hook of the year.
Groove Armada & Mutya Buena: “Song 4 Mutya” is 80’s-tastic

Honorable Mention for Best Rediscovered Adult Contemporary/Soft Rock/70’s pop hit: Andrew Gold, “Lonely Boy”. Seriously, listen to this—it’s immense. Great piano hook, ludicrous but structured lyric, perfect ‘70’s sideman guitar solo. This might have been my most heavily played single this year.

Worst New Trend: The Disney Channel as the new MTV. I saw Hannah Montana live in Omaha. (With Kay Hanley from Letters to Cleo as one of her backing vocalists.)

Best New Trend: The Red Sox Century

Other worthy efforts:

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings: “What Have You Done for Me Lately”
The Fratellis: “Flathead”
Carbon/Silicon: “Why Do Men Fight”
Malcolm Middleton: “A Brighter Beat”

Young Knives: “She’s Attracted To”
Seu Jorge: All the Bowie covers are great

Peter Bjorn and John: “Young Folks”
Polyphonic Spree: “Lithium”
Bloc Party: “I Still Remember (Lull’s Music Box and Tears Mix)”
Miranda Lambert: “Desperate”
Ted Leo: “The Sons of Cain”
Magic Numbers: “Take a Chance”
